New Year messages are written at the exact moment nobody needs them. Everyone is optimistic on 1 January. The useful letter is the one written then and opened in the middle of a hard March.
This is the one time of year when writing to someone about the future is the normal thing to do rather than a grand gesture, which makes it the easiest moment to send a letter that would otherwise feel like too much.
The trick is timing. A message delivered on 1 January competes with everyone else’s and is read in about four seconds. A sealed letter can be written on 1 January and opened later — when the resolutions have collapsed, when the year has taken a turn, or on 31 December when they can finally see how it went. That delay is what gives it force.
It works in both directions. Plenty of people write one to themselves, seal it, and open it twelve months on. Others write to a partner, a friend or someone starting something difficult, with a single instruction on the front: do not read this yet.
