OpenWhen is the digital version of "Open When" letters. Write a message for a specific moment — an anniversary, a bad day, a long-distance milestone — seal it with a virtual wax stamp, set a guardian question, and share the link. Recipients must answer the question and hold to break the seal. No account needed.
Is OpenWhen free to use?
Yes, OpenWhen is completely free. No subscription, no hidden fees, no payment required. Create unlimited sealed messages at no cost.
Do I need to create an account?
No account required. Simply visit openwhen.cards, compose your message, and share the link. No registration, no login, no personal information needed.
How secure are my messages?
The link is the key. Its address is random, it is never listed anywhere, and only someone holding it can open the letter — search engines are told to stay out, and the link previews as a sealed envelope rather than your words. Add a guardian question and the link alone is not enough: the recipient must answer it before the seal can break. Letters are stored on our servers, encrypted in transit and at rest, because they have to be there when the moment arrives. We never sell or share them, and you can disable any letter at any time with your manage link.
Can I send anonymous messages?
Yes. You can choose to sign your message or remain anonymous. The signature field is optional.
What is the wax seal unsealing ritual?
The unsealing ritual requires recipients to hold their finger on the wax seal until it breaks. This creates an intentional, meaningful moment of revelation.
Can recipients read messages without answering the question?
Not if you set one. A guardian question is optional — when you add it, the recipient must answer correctly before the unsealing ritual appears, and wrong answers prevent access. Without one, holding the link is enough.
How long do messages last?
As long as you want them to. A letter has no expiry unless you set one while writing, so it stays openable for the moment it was meant for — whether that is next week or years from now. You can set an expiry date if you would rather it did not, and you can disable any letter at any time with your manage link.
Can I attach a gift card to my letter?
Yes. Premium letters can carry a gift inside — attach any gift card, e-ticket, or voucher as a PDF or image, and your recipient unwraps it after breaking the seal. The file stays private until the letter is unlocked.
