Almost everyone intends to write this letter. Comparatively few people do, and the reason is nearly always the same: it feels like it needs to be perfect, so it stays unwritten. It does not need to be perfect.
A letter to a grandparent is the one people most often say they wish they had sent. It carries a weight the others do not, because the window is visibly finite and everyone involved knows it. That awareness is exactly what makes it hard to start — the letter feels like it should be a summary of a whole relationship, and nobody can write that in an evening.
So do not write that. Write one thing. Tell them a specific story they told you that you still repeat to other people. Tell them what you inherited from them that you only recognised as theirs years later. Tell them plainly that they did well, which is something almost nobody says to their grandparents directly.
